Geneva, Switzerland 04-08/05/2026
The integration of environmental sustainability into research computing took center stage at the Sustainable Computing for Research Communities conference (SC4RC), hosted at CERN. GreenDIGIT is proud to announce that team member Jaime (CSIC) was awarded the prestigious Best Student Talk Award by the Swiss Physical Society for their presentation on the Wattnet initiative.
Jaime’s talk was titled “Wattnet: High-Resolution Carbon and Water Intensity Modelling to Enable Impact-Aware Research Computing.” His slides are available on the conference page here. The presentation highlighted how high-resolution carbon and water intensity data can be leveraged to drive environmentally aware decision-making across research infrastructures.
In addition to the award-winning presentation, the team showcased a dedicated Wattnet poster, sparking vital conversations on energy transparency, sustainability metrics, and the future of green digital infrastructures. Furthermore, GreenDIGIT’s representatives Shashikant Ilager, Damla Rowlandson, and Iida Lehto hosted an interactive session presenting concrete tools developed as part of the project. Indicative subjects were the impact assessment methodology and metrics publication system developed both in the context of GreenDIGIT.
Bringing sustainability into research computing is no longer a future goal, it is becoming a real and active effort across the research infrastructure community. This recognition motivates us to continue advancing our research towards genuinely sustainable computing infrastructures. We extend our congratulations to Jaime and the entire development team, as well as our thanks to the SC4RC organizers for hosting an exceptional event dedicated to sustainable innovation.
